Private Tutoring

I am a registered English Language and Literature tutor with Smart Prep tutoring and First Tutors.
Having worked with children and adult learners of all ages for a number of years I have discovered a real passion to help in any capacity, be it academic, vocational or in any other manner that I can help.

I have been tutoring privately for over 7 years now, and I pride myself on not only developing academic skills with my students but also helping them find their confidence in the areas that may be considered weaker. Graduating from the University of Chichester with a degree in English and Creative Writing, I have worked with a number of students ranging from primary school through to mature learning students and professionals. Areas I have worked on include, but are not limited to:

Creative writing skills
Close reading
Variety of text types
Exam preparation including practice exams
Question types including linking questions
Grammar and punctuation
Development of language and vocabulary

I believe that to be able to teach and assist a student, you must know the subject inside-out yourself. I want my students to have complete faith in me and feel confident and comfortable with what I am teaching, giving them the opportunity to thrive. If I do not know, I will go away and take the time to educate myself. Preparation is a major factor with tutoring and I begin every session with a clear plan as to use our time together as efficiently as possible.

Based just outside of Kelso, Scottish borders I offer private sessions with very reasonable rates. In today's world where remote work and learning is something we have all had to become accustomed to, online zoom sessions are available.

For more information, please do not hesitate to contact me via my website, telephone or email.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Testimonials

Iain tutored my daughter in English throughout her National 5 year.  Despite being a hard worker and bright student, she needed help with all aspects of the curriculum and struggled with the structured format.  Iain was incredibly patient and worked with her to build her confidence.  He was very pleasant and friendly and was willing to put in extra work between sessions to make sure he was as prepared as possible.  He was thorough in his approach, providing his own materials and worksheets which she found very useful.  He worked hard to break down themes and concepts so she could understand them better.  She was thrilled to improve from the C grade she achieved in her Prelim to an A in the final exam.  I would highly recommend Iain for his professionalism, dedication and positivity.
